- Labour Party appoints new General Secretary
Matt Carter was named as Labour's new General Secretary this week by the party's National Executive
Committee. Delighted with his new role, the 31-year-old former regional director of the party said: "My first
job is to ensure Labour continues to talk with and listen to the people of Britain about the challenges we face
and what we would lose if the Tories got back in." Greeting the appointment, Labour Party Chair Ian McCartney
MP said: "This is excellent news. Matt brings to the job a breadth of experience working proactively with
party members, trade unionists and the party in government." Matt took up the post on January 1st 2004. Picture
