MOTION OF THE EUROSOCIALISTS IN GENEVA ADDRESSED TO THE PES COUNCIL (MADRID 1-2 DECEMBER 2008)

MOTION OF THE EUROSOCIALISTS IN GENEVA ADDRESSED TO THE PES COUNCIL (MADRID 1-2 DECEMBER 2008)
At their annual General Assembly on Saturday 29 November 2008, the Eurosocialists in Geneva request the Council of the Party of European Socialists (PES) to consider the following motion :

Considering the lack of direct democracy in Europe as20the principal factor in the dissatisfaction of European citizens with the functioning of the European Union, and that this lack of democracy is also reflected in the functioning of our PES, whose exclusive members are the socialist and social-democratic parties that have been recognized as such.

Considering that many European citizens would like to join the socialist and social-democratic movement, but cannot make their voices heard at the European level;

and considering that the European voters feel less linked to national parties, which could result in the long-term reduction of the political base of our PES.

Supporting the initiative with regard to the PES activists as a first step towards direct democracy within our PES.

We propose to change the PES statutes so that all European citizens, who are committed to the aims of our PES can become an individual member and pay a contribution that corresponds to their level of income.

Motion voted by the General Assembly on 29 November 2008.
